Stand-up paddleboarding was launched towards the end of the 1940s by Duke Kahanamoku, a Hawaiian surfing legend, but also a great swimming champion. Then used in the 60s, by the Beach Boys in Hawaii on Waikiki beach, to accompany their students in surfing lessons, photograph tourists, or even surf small waves. In the 2000s, stand-up paddleboarding was brought back into fashion by surfing greats like Laird Halmilton and Dave Kalama.
